What is it like to live on Orcas year-round? Does it get lonely after the tourists leave at the end of summer?

The end of summer signals a time for islanders to reconnect and have time to spend together. Winters are for slowing W-A-Y down, getting introspective and being creative. Every season on Orcas has its beauty.

Due to deforestation and hunting, clouded leopards are listed as “vulnerable to extinction.” National Zoo scientist Dr. JoGayle Howard and colleagues have been working with clouded leopards at the Front Royal campus sasffince 1978, with the goal of creating a genetically diverse population. In the past 30 years, more than 76 clouded leopards have been born here.
